Ex-Husband Claims Judy Garland was Molested on ‘Wizard of Oz’ Set1 year ago by Edward Antonelli in Trending
With the whole #MeToo movement in full swing, these allegations come as a shock for its time period. Sid Luft is the ex-movie producer who helped Judy Garland make her big break into Hollywood and eventually married the actress in 1952. In a memoir entitled Judy and I: My Life with Judy Garland, Left claims that the actors who played munchkin characters made the set of The Wizard of Oz a living hell for the then teenage star.
While viewers of the film seen Garland’s incredible vocals on the yellow brick road, the memoir claims that munchkins who were mostly in their 40s would often grab up the actress dress.
Garland unfortunately passed away in 1969 but also claimed of their bad behavior in a 1967 interview. She said, “They were drunks. They put them all in one hotel… they got smashed every night and the police had to pick them up in butterfly nets.” Producer Mervyn LeRoy remembers a similar situation and says, “They had sex orgies in the hotel, we had to have police on just about every floor.”
Jerry Maren, the last surviving munchkin at 98 years-old denied allegations in 1996 to Entertainment Weekly. He called the total thing “bullshit”. Maren also had nothing but good things to say about Garland stating that he expected a snobby movie star but worked alongside a young lady who was more exited to meet them then they were to meet her.
Luft’s memoir was never in fact completed. After choosing two new managers in 1960, Luft stopped writing and eventually divorced Garland in 1962. The book was completed by Randy I. Schmidt based on extensive interviews involving Luft. Schmidt also worked on a book of his own based on Garland’s career so he knows the subject well.
The hardcover of Judy and I: My Life with Judy Garland is currently available on Amazon.
