Has Disney Confirmed a Release Date for the ‘Black Panther’ Sequel?

7 months ago by Kristin Paradisis in Movie News, Heroes, FILMS

Marvel Studios is typically very secretive about its Marvel Comics Universe (MCU) movie release dates, and although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that a Black Panther sequel will be hitting theaters at some point in the future, there has not been any news on an official release date. However, Marvel’s parent company Disney recently made changes to its 2020-2022 movie release schedule and they might have just given the release date away.

Most notably, Disney confirmed yet another delay for the release of Indiana Jones 5  and moved up a premiere date of an untitled Marvel film. The shift moved the mysterious movie’s release date up by 5 months to a date that falls almost exactly three years from the release of the Marvel box office hit Black Panther. The release of the first film was during the month of February, which is Black History Month. The date shift was from July 30, 2021, to February 12, 2021.

Prior to 2016’s Deadpool, mid-February was not considered a great slot for major superhero releases. However, the incredible box office success of the first Black Panther film combined with the cultural significance of the month of February has provided a winning formula that Disney and Marvel appear to be ready to use once again.

When speaking to Entertainment Weekly back in March about a Black Panther sequel, Kevin Feige shared:

“One of the favorite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two. There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther.”

The Marvel Studios executive also shared that the sequel already has a “solid direction”. Despite the knowledge of a potential release date being up in the air, Ryan Coogler is expected to continue his role as director for the next Black Panther film. Be sure to stay tuned to The Feature Presentation for any and all updates on the Black Panther sequel!
