Jordan Peele Partners With Amazon To Create Lorena Bobbit Docu-series11 months ago by Hadiya Cambridge in TV News
For some, the name Lorena Bobbit still rings bells.
Her face and name were once plastered on every newspaper, tabloid and television screen nationwide in 1993. Bobbit is notably famous for castrating (a nicer word for “cutting off”) her husbands’ penis. Bobbit reportedly claimed he raped her earlier that day and in a blind rage she cut it off in revenge while he was sleeping.
Amazon chose Oscar-winning producer Jordan Peele (Get Out) to steer the series in the right direction to make sure Bobbit’s story is told honestly and truthfully in wake of the current #MeToo movement. The four-part series titled “Lorena” will also follow the instant media coverage Bobbit received as her case became a public spectacle.
“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele stated. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”
The head of Unscripted at Amazon Originals, Heather Schuster commented on Peele’s work stating:
“Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project. Lorena reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong.”
The series will feature sensitive topics such as domestic violence, rape, and assault that most women deal with every day.
The docu-series is set to debut November 19–If you don’t have Amazon Prime yet, you better get it soon.
