HBO’s Game of Thrones brought in a series record of 17.4 million viewers on Sunday with 11.8 million viewers tuning in during the original 9 pm airtime for the season 8 premiere. Although the popular show has a large fan base around the world, The Wayans Bros. comedian, Marlon Wayans stated that Game of Thrones needs more black actors. According to Marlon, there’s a lack of representation for the black culture and this is what he had say in an interview with TMZ:
“I don’t see a lot of brothers on it. It ain’t no Juliuses, Lamars, and a Jamal. Imagine Jamal on a dragon. It’s either Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, and I chose Walking Dead because I don’t have all that f*cking time to binge watch all this sh*t.”

This isn’t the first time Game of Thrones has been called out for its lack of diversity. Star Wars actor, John Boyega, criticized the fantasy series for its lack of black actors in a 2017 GQ article. It has also been pointed out that majority of Black actors in the show, portray slaves or uncivilized barbarians. Although concerns about the shows cast have raised a few eyebrows in the black community, it has been reported that the medieval series will include more diversity. Before the premiere, the network partnered with Columbia Records for this season’s soundtrack, which is made up of a lot of Hip Hop/R&B acts. It has been previously confirmed that the album will be including Travis Scott, SZA, Joey Bada$$, A$AP Rocky, Chloe and Halle, Ty Dolla Sign and more.
