Nicki Minaj Speaks on Tension With Cardi B11 months ago by Amber Le in Trending
Nicki Minaj dropped two bangers yesterday afternoon and sent the internet into flames with “Chun Li” and “Barbie Tingz” which has already conquered the number one and two spot. The Barbz dedicated the day to Minaj by deeming it #NickiDay, which quickly took over social media and became a worldwide trending hashtag before the interview with Zane Lowe even started.
During the interview on Beats 1, the queen addressed her hiatus, her relationship with Meek Mill and why she was a little disappointed with Cardi B.
The female rapper was welcomed back with a vengeance and when asked about her hiatus, she explained she wanted tunnel vision for her next album which is why she went MIA from social media,
“I needed to focus. I wanted to make sure I was writing something that was meaningful to me and that would inspire and that would captivate my audience. But most importantly, I just wanted to have fun again, I wanted to go into the studio and have fun without giving a sh** about… I didn’t want to see anything. I wasn’t only not posting, I took all forms of social media off my phone, and it was actually the most genius decision I ever made.”
This interview was one of her deepest ones where she even got a little emotional when she was addressing exactly what was going down between her and newcomer, Cardi B. During “Motorsport” many decided to switch up and ride the Nicki Hate Train, not knowing the facts weren’t all there and there’s two sides to every story. She tells Lowe how she tried to clear things up by reaching out to Quavo so the ill willed speculation could stop about her being jealous of Cardi’s success. The day the artists were supposed to shoot the video, Nicki’s hairstylist couldn’t make it and everyone knew that but no one spoke on Minaj’s behalf regarding it, mentioning she texted Quavo to back her up,
“He texted me, he was like, ‘I would go on Twitter and back you up if you were my girl lol.’ And that hurt, because he’s somebody…”
She then went on to talk about the situation with Cardi B and how it was all misconstrued, she felt there was a lack of respect and it hurt her,
“I remember when I first came in the game, if a female of that stature had done a feature with me on it. I would only be singing their praises and saying, ‘Thank you.’ The first interview she did after ‘Motorsport’ came out, it just really hurt me, ’cause she looked so aggravated and angry. And the only thing she kept saying was ‘Oh, I didn’t hear that, I didn’t hear that verse.’ I was like ‘What?’ her Most recent interview, Cardi, that’s when I just came back on Instagram, and I saw it and I felt good. I finally felt like she said something genuinely nice about me.”
Hopefully the two make up and I’m sure majority of the hip hop industry agrees. She goes on and gets a little emotional when asked about Meek’s current state, saying how she would never wish jail on anybody and how Meek’s mom almost brought her to tears,
“I don’t wanna talk about legal things. What I will say now is that… I will say that the judge in question did everything I asked of her. So, I can’t badmouth her because I met her personally, and I know what she said to us. And he knows that, and I know that. But I wouldn’t wish jail on anybody. What made me shed tears the other day was seeing his mother cry… she, during the relationship, was always so sweet to me.”
Zane Lowe brings the interview back to being career based after seeing how distraught she was becoming, asking about the new album and if she could reveal the title to which Nicki politely curved and stated,
“This is the best album in my life that I’ve ever created.”
