Questlove Explains Why He Didn’t Participate In “Surviving R.Kelly”2 weeks ago by Amber Le in Trending
Things are getting heated. The first 2 episodes of Surviving R.Kelly released on Lifetime Network last night, despite threats of legal action. Director Dream Hampton isn’t the least bit worried about the singer’s threats. During an interview with Shadow & Act, she explained the difficulties of making the docu-series, naming a couple of celebrities who declined their invitation to participate in the production.
“John Legend was the only one. I asked Jay-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle. I mean, most people just don’t want to touch it. I remember Ahmire ‘Questlove’ Thompson was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.”
Questlove took to Twitter with his reasoning as to why he did not want to be apart of the documentary after fans came at him for not speaking out.
“I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the R. Kelly documentary that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the ‘good times’ portion of the doc, like stanning for his ‘genius.’ I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have i EVER stanned for him.”
In addition, he continued on to say that he was in no way, shape or form defending the singer and there’s no way of protecting him.
“Just wanna make that abundantly clear in a non ‘he doth protest too much’ way. That Dream Hampton quote makes it look like I’m protecting him. I’m thinking ‘damn I don’t wanna be the one guy I always in the documentaries fawning over someone I detest.’ So make ZERO mistake on my positioning.”
Hampton has been active with the Tweets regardng the hashtag #SurvivingRKelly, clearing things up for viewers along the way and she did not skip a beat when she clarified what she wanted out of Questlove’s participation.
“I didn’t ask you about his ‘Genius.’ I’ve never thought he was a genius. I asked you to come on camera and say the same thing you said on Twitter. I told you I need Black male allies.”
