Ready Player One took the global box office by storm with an impressive $181.2 million. The Warner Bros’ motion picture released in theaters nationwide on Wednesday evening and grossed $53.2 million since opening day. With a CinemaScore of an A-, it’s looking good for the film to generate even more numbers in the near future. The movie brought in $128 million from “62 territories on over 35,600 theaters” internationally. In China, the adaptation generated a whopping $61.7 million alone.
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One is a movie adaptation from a novel written by Ernest Cline. The film takes place in the year 2045 where the world is in the midst of chaos and destruction but thanks to James Halliday, citizens have found comfort in a virtual reality universe deemed the OASIS. When Halliday passes away, there is a contest. Whoever finds a digital Easter egg in the cyber world will reign the OASIS. Wade Watts decides to take on the challenge head on.
