Regina King Vows To Employ 50 Percent Women During Golden Globe Speech2 weeks ago by Amber Le in Trending
Regina King is truly right for the throne of the Golden Globes. After being nominated for the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. It’s her first Golden Globe and most certainly won’t be her last. She’s been previously nominated for her role in Seven Seconds and American Crime.
In the midst of her speech, after she thanked director Barry Jenkins, the Beale Street cast and her son, King continued on to emphasize the importance of equity. She made a public and honorable vow to employ at least 50 percent of women in all of her productions.
“So often everyone out there, they hear us on the red carpet… and they say celebrities, we’re using the time to talk about ourselves when we’re on our soap box, and using the moment to talk about the systematic things that are going on in life. The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big and we’re speaking for everyone. I’m going to use my platform right now to say, in the next two years, everything that I produce I am making a vow – and it’s going to be tough – to make sure that everything that I produce is 50 percent women.”
She then concluded her speech with reaching out for others to join the movement as well.
“I challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power – not just in our industry, in all industries – I challenge you to challenge yourself and stand with us.”
