Stephen Curry and Viola Davis’ production companies are joining forces for an upcoming documentary titled Emanuel. Unanimous Media and JuVee Productions will be executive producing the film, revolving around June 17, 2015. They’re using their platforms to tell the story of a 21 year old white supremacist, Dylann Roof and how he murdered 9 African Americans at the Emanuel African Methodis Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Both figures are working directly with the city of Charleston and the affected families. Curry expresses the importance of the narrative of the situation.
“The documentary highlights how a horrible tragedy can bring a community together, and spreads an important message about the power of forgiveness. Stories like this are the reason we created Unanimous and entered the entertainment space. I hope the film inspires others like it does me.”
Davis commented in addition to the NBA star’s statement.
“June 17, 2015 served as a stark reminder of the power of racism. We, along with the country, grieved each family’s loss. Yet, miraculously, from this devastation we witnessed tremendous benchmarks of humanity. The survivors found courage to love in the face of hate.”
VIBE reports, Emanuel is “a story of justice and faith, love and hate, and the healing power of forgiveness, Emanuel remembers those who are no longer with us, and chronicles the lives of those who were left to grapple with this senseless act of hate.
Emanuel will premiere at the DOC NYC on Nov. 14 and 15.”
