The ‘Venom’ Movie Had to Make a Major Change to the Character’s Signature Costume4 weeks ago by Kristin Paradisis in Movie News, Trailers, Heroes, FILMS
It has been revealed that one major difference to comic book Venom audiences can expect from live-action Venom is the character’s costume. After a trailer for Venom was shown to fans this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, audiences can officially expect Tom Hardy’s Venom suit to exclude the large white spider logo seen on the alien’s chest area.
Director Ruben Fleischer has explained that Venom’s original character had no relation to Spider-Man. Hence, the logo, which was on the suit because of Spider-Man, had to be removed. Fleischer further discussed the decision to remove the white spider print, sharing:
“If you look at the comics, in Venom, there is just elements of white within his suit. Because our character does not originate from Spider-Man, it makes no sense to put a spider on his chest. We tried to be as accurate as we possibly could, even though some people feel it’s inaccurate, but there is a lot of white and we wanted to give him a distinctive pattern… If you have an all-black character, especially in night scenes, he just kind of disappears. Since we couldn’t use the Spider-Man symbol, we wanted to give him another graphic element, and those veins that kind of form a shape on his chest was an original idea that we just thought looked really cool.”
Most comic book and Spider-Man fans may recall that Peter Parker is the first to discover Venom when the alien becomes part of him and takes on the appearance of the signature Spider-Man suit in black and white. The suit, of course, included a large spider logo, just like Spider-Man. However, since the story of Venom is being repurposed based on the alien’s origin story, which is completely removed from Spider-Man, it did not make sense to keep the white spider symbol. While some fans are caught off guard by the change, Venom is still sure to bring something new and exciting to theaters, with Fleischer suggesting it may be the most violent Marvel movie thus far.
Venom is set for release on October 5.
