It’s official! The first spin-off film of the entire Transformers franchise Bumblebee has received a release date of December 21, 2018. The film will be the first in the series to be directed by someone other than Michael Bay. Bumblebee‘s plot is set in the 1980s before any events from past Transformers films ever took place. This film’s story will be more character-driven than films we have seen in Transformers past.
John Cena is set to star in the movie as Agent Burns, who is a government operative that associates with Sector 7, a group that hunted robots in disguise during the plots of the original Transformers movies. His character appears to be an antagonist to Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) and her robot pals.
Other cast members include Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as the male lead of Bumblebee, as well as Abby Quinn of Black Mirror and Ricardo Hoyos of Degrassi: The Next Generation. With the selected cast full of so many young actors, it is clear that the franchise is committing to establishing a more youthful tone with the Bumblebee film. Christina Hodson, who is the only writer left on the film that was part of the original writer’s room, will be penning the script and Travis Knight is set to direct.
