Why a Female Lead Was Casted in ‘Transformers’ Spin-Off ‘Bumblebee’9 months ago by Kristin Paradisis in Movie News, Heroes, FILMS
Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee is set for release in December of this year and the film is already expected to have many differences from any previously released film in the franchise. Not only will the movie’s plot be comprised of happenings prior to the events of any past Transformers film, but Bumblebee will also feature Hailee Seinfeld as the film’s female lead, Charlie. According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, it was executive producer Steven Spielberg who recommended casting a female lead:
“Steven [Spielberg] had always had an idea that a young girl and Bumblebee would be a great combination, so we headed in that direction.”
Considering the fact that leads in past Transformers movies have all been males, Spielberg’s idea is certainly helping to take the spinoff in a fresh direction. It has been tough to pinpoint Spielberg’s touches on creative decisions for any previous Transformer film, as director Michael Bay has been known to take all creative choices into his own hands. Therefore, it is nice to hear of any recommendations Spielberg makes behind the scenes. Many of the movie’s other new character designs are likely to help the new film become a refresher for the entire series.
Bumblebee is scheduled to release in theaters on December 21, 2018.
