Will Smith Explains Why He Turned Down “The Matrix”2 months ago by Amber Le in Trending
Will Smith has become one of the most legendary actors in the Hollywood industry. He’s starred in numerous, infamous movies and he will forever go down in history as one of the greats. Of course, he’s revealed that he’s had to pick and choose what roles he would take on and which ones he would have to decline. Neo, from The Matrix, was one of them.
In the middle of the 1990’s, Smith was currently undergoing production for Men in Black. Steven Spielburg has to convince the actor to partake in the film. He was fearful that people would only see him as “the alien movie guy.” During this time, the Wachowskis were interested in having him star in The Matrix. He explained why he turned down the role.
“I didn’t get it when I read it. It’s a hard movie to pitch. You know: ‘Everybody lives inside a computer.’ It was only when I saw it that I really got it.”
With that being said, Smith most certainly believes that it was for the better with a strong opinion that Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne’s chemistry in the movie was on point.
“If I had done it becuase I’m black, then Morpheus wouldn’t have been black cause they were looking at Val Kilmer. So, I probably would have messed The matrix up. I would’ve ruined it. I did y’all a favor.”
