After much success with his music industry debut in 2012, August Alsina seemed to be a staple in the R&B genre from the beginning. With vocal abilities measuring up to those of artists like Trey Songz and Chris Brown it seemed as if things were only going up for him. Unfortunately, that is not the way things worked out for August.
His health issues first became public when he was hospitalized for exhaustion related seizures in 2014. Shortly after that August revealed he was losing his eyesight in 2015. He had been under the radar for during the time and resurfaced with the news of his health battles. He explained that he was suffering from degenerative eye disease, an incurable disease that causes an individual to lose their vision as they age. He explained that his vision was still intact but it was slowing worsening. After sharing this information with the public, August again fell behind the scenes to focus on his health.
In more recent interviews, specifically his interview with his close friend and mentor Jada Pinkett Smith, August opened up again about his health issues. He explained that he had to undergo extremely painful surgery to stop his eyesight from worsening, he was left partially blind in his left eye, but overall he’s just thankful for to still possess vision abilities. He went on to share that he was suffering from a liver disease that mirrors symptoms that fall in line with Autoimmune Hepatitis. He held a positive disposition during this interview and expressed optimism about his future.
Despite Alsina’s positive affirmations, his health status has still continued to plummet. On Monday, July 8, 2019, when August posted a video on Instagram to share some news with his followers; he was apologizing to his fans for recently missing a performance at the Essence Festival 2019 … he then went on to provide an explanation. He informed fans that his autoimmune system disease had caused him to lose his ability to walk, he forced to be hospitalized in order to get to the bottom. Alsina appears to be forcing himself to be optimistic despite his apparent devastation. He closes out the jokes with a what was meant to be a joke but actually was weighed down with grimness; he’s seen laughing in the video before saying “Oh, I got a new car” at this he turns the direction of the camera to capture a walker that is on the side of his hospital bed. He playfully says that the “car” is clean meaning it’s a cool car, clearly trying to make light of an extremely sad situation. August Alsina just might be the only 26 year old guy to joke about having to get around with a walker.
As of now there have been no updates on whether he will regain his walking abilities.
