The horror movie Ma made it’s debut in theaters this past weekend; it was also Octavia Spencer’s debut as the lead actress in a film. The film was produced with a budget of only $5 million. It successfully reaped $18 million during its opening weekend. You may have seen Octavia in popular films like Hidden Figures, The Help and Fruitvale Station, she’s an actress that is usually cast in supporting roles. While Spencer is a familiar face on the big screen, she’s never played a role quite like the role of Sue Ann. After watching the film, I would attribute its box office success to Spencer’s performance in the role of Sue Ann. There seems to be a direct correlation between black female leads and box office hits.
Prior to the release of the horror film Me, writer and director Jordan Peele’s Us was released. The film, Us also featured a black female lead actress. After the success of Jordan’s debut film Get Out, there was much anticipation for Peele’s second project. Upon its release, the film Us, definitely delivered as was expected. The estimated production budget for Us was $20 million, the film brought in an estimated $70 million for its opening weekend.
While this is a trend that is starting off slow, it’s also one that is sure to take off in the next coming months. Keep your eyes peeled for some of that #blackgirlmagic on the big screen!
Ma is a horror film directed by Tate Taylor. Universal Pictures released the movie May 31 and is available in theaters everywhere.
