Although ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ was at the top of the box office this weekend, it still was the worst opening numbers ever in ‘Fast & Furious’ history. The Universal franchise has been a dependable money maker with sales as high as $1 billon worldwide for their two latest movies. This is a valid reason why ‘Fast & Furious’ movies are still being released 10 years later.‘Fast & Furious’ sales were doing so well that Universal decided to do a spin-off of the series to expand the franchise. ‘Hobbs & Shaw’, starring ‘Fast & Furious’ veterans Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham hit theaters this weekend and received great reviews from movie critics. Despite the positive reviews and heavy promotion for the movie, sales were extremely low for the franchise’s standards.
According to the weekend box office chart posted on Box Office Mojo, the spin-off earned $60.8 million nationally during its first weekend. ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ made almost $4 million less than projected its first weekend, and was lower than the ‘Fast & Furious’ 2009 opening weekend, which was $70.9 million.
Even though ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ is off to a rough start, it is still too soon to write the movie off as a box office disappointment. The franchise has been a bigger deal internationally than it is domestically, so there may still be bigger numbers in store. The global sales are $180 million which is $20 million short from production costs. We will have to wait and see if ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ goes down as a success or failure!
