Since their inception around the turn of the century, Netflix has completely upended the entertainment industry. The inception of streaming revolutionized content consumption as we know it and has led to some seismic changes in the entertainment industry as a whole. Content is being produced at rates greater than ever before and subsequently being consumed just as feverishly, highlighting a renaissance currently taking place in the world of entertainment as we know it. Now the streaming giant is ready to extend its reach even further: Netflix will now begin implementing low-cost, ad-supported plans that would add commercials to content being consumed on the platform.
When the company was originally founded in 1997, Netflix had high hopes. While companies like Blockbuster reigned supreme, Netflix saw an opportunity to do something different and introduced us all to the world of streaming. Since then, it has been virtually impossible to ignore the impacts streaming has had upon the entertainment industry that only seemingly grow with each passing day. Now Netflix is ready to switch it up though, announcing plans to add a low-cost, ad-supported plan that is unlike anything they’ve ever offered before. While services like Hulu have offered this option for years, Netflix’s implementation of it should allow for an abundance of new subscribers to join the service at a more affordable cost that will only see their number of subscribers increase dramatically. No details about when these plans will be available are ready quite yet, however interested parties can remain on the lookout as further updates become available in the coming weeks.
Despite the growing level of competition over the past few years, Netflix remains the top dog in the streaming space. This move should only help their case as it should bring a plethora of new subscribers to their platform that will make it even harder for their competitors to keep up. We will just have to wait and see as Netflix’s new low-cost plans go into effect in the near future.
