Director Alex Garland, known for Civil War and Ex Machina, is teaming up with A24 once again for what may be their biggest and most expensive project to date. Garland will direct and write a live-action film adaptation of the hit video game Elden Ring.
The film is being made in collaboration with Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24, and is based on the game developed by FromSoftware and directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game’s mythological world, originally created with help from Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, will serve as the story’s plot . Martin is also working as a producer on the movie alongside Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis.
Elden Ring is a dark fantasy action RPG known for its huge open world and notoriously difficult gameplay. It builds on the style of the Dark Souls series, challenging players with intense combat and massive, brutal bosses.

The game was both a critical and commercial success, winning Game of the Year in 2022 and selling over 30 million copies. A new spinoff, Elden Ring: Nightreign, launches on May 30, and a bundled version of the original game, its DLC, and Nightreign is expected in 2025 for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
For A24, this project marks a major entry into the world of high-profile video game adaptations. Given Elden Ring’s epic scale, the film is likely to require a hefty visual effects budget. Garland previously directed Civil War, A24’s most expensive film to date, which earned $127.3 million globally. His latest film, Warfare, has grossed $32.1 million since its release last month.
