Alex Garland‘s new thriller, Civil War, is considered A24’s biggest movie launch after debuting in theaters this weekend. According to Entertainment Weekly, Civil War is the biggest R-rated opening of the year. It earned $25.7 million at the box office, giving the film company its most monumental opening weekend. Initially, A24’s Hereditary was in the lead for this historical mark, amassing $13.6 million after premiering in theaters in 2018.
Civil War occurs in the future and sees a group of wartime journalists, played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Cailee Spaeny, covering the divide across the United States as they attempt to travel to Washington, D.C, during the second Civil War.
The logline states, “Civil War creates a scenario where California and Texas residents come together against a president who disbanded the FBI and given himself a third term.”
The movie also stars Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman.
Civil War is directed and written by Garland. Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Gregory Goodman produced the movie.
