After decades of global stardom, everyone’s favorite bow-wearing icon is finally stepping into the Hollywood spotlight. Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema have officially announced that Hello Kitty — the first-ever theatrical film starring Sanrio’s beloved character — will arrive in theaters July 21st, 2028.
The long-awaited announcement appeared across Warner Bros.’ social platforms, accompanied by a playful caption:
“Hello Hollywood #HelloKittyMovie is coming to theaters July 21, 2028!”
This cinematic milestone marks a full-circle moment for the Japanese cultural phenomenon introduced in 1974. Since her debut, Hello Kitty has grown from a simple character on a coin purse to an international symbol of kindness, friendship, and nostalgia. Appearing on everything from fashion collaborations to theme park rides. Now, she’s ready to charm audiences on the big screen.
A Dream Project Nearly A Decade In The Making
The Hello Kitty film has been in development for years, tracing its origins back to 2019 when New Line Cinema acquired the film rights from Sanrio — a historic first for the Japanese company. Directing the project is Leo Matsuda, best known for Disney’s Inner Workings, bringing an authentic blend of heartfelt storytelling and animation artistry. The screenplay, penned by Dana Fox (Wicked), promises a narrative as endearing as it is visually enchanting.
Longtime producer Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. spearheads the production, a journey that began nearly a decade ago with the blessing of Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji. Flynn’s collaborator Shelby Thomas, who is also producing Disney’s upcoming Moana live-action adaptation (2026), is overseeing production for the project.
According to Warner Bros., the animated feature will see Hello Kitty and her friends embark on a cinematic adventure “sure to delight audiences of all ages.” While plot details remain under wraps, fans are already speculating whether familiar Sanrio favorites like My Melody, Gudetama, and Little Twin Stars might join Hello Kitty on-screen.
From Stationery Star To Silver Screen Sensation
Hello Kitty’s journey to Hollywood represents a cross-cultural celebration of joy, imagination, and resilience. Over five decades, the Sanrio empire has transformed a simple line drawing into a multi-billion-dollar brand spanning cafés, video games, and collaborations with global icons like Lady Gaga and Balenciaga.
Now, with Warner Bros. and New Line’s animation expertise, the world’s most recognizable feline is set to capture hearts all over again! This time, in theaters. Mark your calendars, because in summer 2028, the world will be saying one thing in unison:
“Hello, Hollywood”.
