I’m rather unexpected fashion, superhero films have become the name of the game in Hollywood. Beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man which debuted in 2008 and taking off from there, we have seen a plethora of superhero films over the past decade that have, in some cases, greatly exceeded expectations. One superhero has seemingly been missing through all of it though, one of the biggest superheroes of them all: Superman himself. Well now it looks like that is over as James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has officially entered the pre-production stage and could be in theaters sooner than fans anticipated.
Originally appearing in an episode of Action Comics in the summer of 1938, Superman immediately resonated fans due to his duality and ability to live two separate lives. It just so happens that one of those lives is that of arguably the greatest superhero live, bolstered by his super strength, his ability to fly and much more. Countless Superman projects have been produced over the years since then and while they’ve all seen varying degrees of success, none of them have had a director like Gunn at the helm. The film was first announced at the beginning of the year, and Gunn officially announced that the project will enter pre-production this week, telling fans how excited his to be apart of the superhero’s legacy. A synopsis provided by Warner Brothers provides us with an in-depth look at what to expect from the film: “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.” While it remains unclear who will play the superhero as Gunn himself has said he will be looking for a younger Superman, ruling out Henry Cavill who was the last actor to play Superman, and fans should remain on the lookout for further updates regarding Superman: Legacy in the coming weeks.
While Superman has made appearances in films the past decade or so, they have been few and far between compared to his counterparts. So to have James Gunn personally invested in the future of the Superman franchise is big, and Superman: Legacy should be something special. As of right now, Superman: Legacy is expected to hit theaters in 2025.
