James Gunn revealed that his adoptive pup Ozu inspired him to reimagine Krypto the Superdog in the new Superman film. The director went on X, formerly known as Twitter, and told fans that although Krypto wasn’t meant to be in the movie, his furry friend was the reason he decided to add him to the storyline.
“Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic, to say the least,” Gunns tweeted. “He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he let us touch him.”
He continued, “I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
Krypto the Superdog has powers similar to Kryptonians, such as super strength, flight, speed, and invulnerability. Even though Superman’s four-legged companion hasn’t appeared on the big screen, he’s been in shows like Smallville and Titans.
The upcoming DC Universe film, helmed by James Gunn, will be a unique creation in its own right. However, Superman will not adhere to traditional expectations. Instead, the movie will explore Clark Kent’s younger days, showcasing his dual life as a superhero and a reporter.
