Following the release of her compellingly transparent, and soul-moving single “Toxic,” Kehlani is back with the surprise release of her latest music video for “Everybody Business.”
After teasing us with hints of a new album, the singer/songwriter has been gracing us with a series of DIY “Quarantine Style” videos. In “Everybody Business,” she is captured in a stunning purple pant suit, looking delicate and channeling her inner earth sign energy as she lays on the grass and sings about her mishaps with love, her unrelenting willingness to love boundlessly despite such encounters, and her disregard for the blogs and media attempting to hurt her. The video opens with people criticizing her while a Google search screen flashes searches of slanderous rumors.
“I hear every word they talk / Try not to care at all,” she lulls on the hook. “I know it’s frontin’, don’t know me from nothin’/Still learning to shake it off/I know I can take it all/I know they frontin’/You know they frontin’, babe.”
As if her lyrical affinity, and mesmerizing vocals weren’t impressive enough, Kehlani, also known as Hyphy Williams, self-directed the video, and created the beat for “Everybody Business” along with producers Go Grizzly and Loshendrix. The smoldering guitar ballad interpolates Pharrell Williams’ “Frontin’” featuring Jay-Z. “I remember saying the first line and all of us knowing it was going to be one of the ones,” she said in an Instagram post about the song. “The way we all laughed, got silent, nodded our heads, walked around in circles. When I was nervous to sing the hook out loud because I didn’t know if they would think I was hilarious for flipping Pharrell’s ‘Frontin” in a guitar ballad.”
She stressed that the coronavirus pandemic was not going to stop her from releasing these new vibes. “if i don’t get music out in the time i felt it lived it breathed it and made it, it may not ever come out because by the time that would be suggested to be the ‘right’ time to drop it..i’d probably be a whole new person with new feelings and new things to write about. “
