A new update about KPop Demon Hunters 2 has revealed Sony and Netflix’s exciting sequel status. After KPop Demon Hunters took the streaming platform by storm with 236 million views, Sony has greenlit the second installment. Co-director Maggie Kang also confirmed the news while speaking to Variety. During their interview, she said that there are still “a lot of questions left unanswered,” seemingly referencing the backstories for Zoey and Mira, which were cut short from the original 85-minute runtime.
“This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira … it just wasn’t the movie for those stories,” she expressed at the time.

The news comes after a surprise sing-along of KPop Demon Hunters debuted in 1,700 North American theaters from August 22-24 and hit big numbers at the box office that weekend. Netflix also took merchandising rights. In return, Sony has kept a share of soundtrack and publishing revenues. Imageworks, Netflix’s animation company, has gained some profit as well. Reported margins reached as high as 20 to 30 percent, compared to the usual 10 to 12 percent targeted by studios.
