Fans are screaming for Scary MoVIe
Twelve years after audiences last saw the satirical chaos of the Scary Movie franchise, the beloved spoof series is officially rising from the grave. Paramount and Miramax have confirmed that Scary Movie 6 or as some reports suggest, the stylized Scary MoVIe will slash its way into theaters on June 12th, 2026.
The revival reunites the original creative forces who made the franchise a phenomenon. The Wayans Brothers, along with longtime collaborator Rick Alvarez (White Chicks, A Haunted House), are penning the script. Marlon Wayans has also confirmed he will return to his fan-favorite role as the hilariously oblivious Shorty Meeks. Joining him are franchise staples Anna Faris returning as Cindy Campbell and Regina Hall back as Brenda Meeks, both of whom helped cement Scary Movie as a box-office juggernaut in the early 2000s.
Wayans, who recently bulked up to play a football player in the upcoming horror film Him, revealed that he’s shedding 20 pounds to slip back into Shorty’s shoes. “I didn’t wanna show up to set as Shorty buff at 225. I wanna do the work. I wanna look like Shorty, so when I’m able to [in his Shorty voice] have fun and s—, people are able to laugh at me, son” he told Entertainment Weekly.
But Scary Movie 6 isn’t just a reunion. In fact, it’s a reinvention. Wayans teased that the new film won’t shy away from addressing how comedy, horror, and culture itself have evolved since the last installment. “Not just horror has changed, but films have changed, the audience has changed, the world has shifted. The way to do that is to make the generational gap part of the conversation. That’s how we constructed the movie so we could talk about it all” he explained.
While the exact horror films being parodied remain under wraps, it’s safe to assume modern genre hits will be fair game. Titles like Sinners and Weapons could be among the satirical targets, alongside yet-to-be-released thrillers that will keep the parody timely. Wayans also hinted that more legacy cast members may return, though no deals have been finalized.
The Scary Movie franchise first carved out its place in pop culture in 2000 with Keenen Ivory Wayans’ original, which grossed $278 million on a $19 million budget. Its sequels delivered box-office success throughout the early 2000s, parodying everything from The Ring to War of the Worlds. However, 2013’s Scary Movie 5—the only entry without Faris and Hall—underperformed critically and commercially, seemingly burying the series for good.
Now, with comedy spoofs like the rebooted Naked Gun proving there’s still an appetite for genre send-ups, Scary Movie 6 could deliver the revival fans have been craving. With its iconic cast back, the Wayans at the head, and a fresh satirical lens on today’s horror and pop culture landscape, the film is shaping up to be a bloody good time at the box office.
