DreamWorks Animation has once again postponed Shrek 5’s release date. It was originally planned to hit theaters next summer, but the film was first moved to December 2026. It is now scheduled to arrive in cinemas in June 2027, according to Deadline.
Neither DreamWorks Animation nor Universal has commented on the latest delay. While no official reason has been given, industry speculation suggests the move is to avoid competing with major December 2026 releases, including Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6.
The news has disappointed many fans, with one joking on X:
“Another delay? At this rate my kids will be showing Shrek 5 to their kids.”
The first Shrek film premiered in 2001, telling the story of a grumpy ogre on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona, aided by a wisecracking donkey and, later, the swashbuckling Puss in Boots. It became a global box office hit, earning $487 million (£362 million) and spawning three sequels, plus two spin-offs (Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish).

Shrek 5 will be the seventh film in the franchise. Returning voices include Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. The trailer also introduced a new character, Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter, Felicia, voiced by Zendaya.
However, the reveal sparked mixed reactions online, with some criticizing the animation style and comparing it to the infamous backlash against the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie design in 2019, which was later changed before release.
