Since the beginning of 2020, we have seen countless films and other big-budget Hollywood projects get delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether it be one of the many long awaited Marvel projects to come out since then or what have you, virtually no project has been impervious to COVID-19 and all of the complications that come with it. Nearly two years removed and the virus continues to loom over society as everybody adjusts to the new status quo that said virus has inspired, and as a result life as we know it continues to be hampered by the abundance of COVID-19 variants that have arisen. Now the latest variant has a new casualty, with Sony Pictures announcing the release of their new project Morbius will be delayed three months amidst recent COVID related flare ups.
Originally set to release this month, Morbius stars Jared Leto as a doctor who nearly loses his life, only to discover upon his revival that he has garnered strange new powers. These powers force Leto’s character into a precarious situation however: though as a doctor he is concerned with the good of society, with his new powers he develops a new personality that has much more sinister intentions. The dichotomy proves to be Morbius’ biggest test throughout the film and plants him firmly in the Spider-Man universe that has seen a resurgence this year, hopefully ensuring that Morbius won’t be the only time we see Leto in the titular role. However it looks like excited fans are going to have to wait a little longer, as Sony Pictures announced today tha it would delay the release of Morbius until April as the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 pandemic is currently plaguing communities far and wide. While no exact release date has been announced yet as Sony continues to monitor the new variant and its impact upon moviegoers, they at least have something to look forward to this spring when Morbius eventually hits theaters.
Though Leto originally achieved fame as the lead singer of the band 30 Seconds to Mars, he has made quite a name for himself in the worlds of both music and acting. The singer-actor has starred in several memorable films throughout the years, recently donning the infamous role of The Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad and delivering a performance that has warranted him a spin-off film as a direct result. He is clearly no stranger to the rolle of villain, and moviegoers can look forward to seeing the talented individual sink his teeth into his latest role in Morbius when it hits theaters this spring.
