Paramount is officially ushering in a bold new directorial voice. The studio has set Teyana Taylor’s feature directorial debut, Get Lite, for a wide theatrical release on April 9th, 2027. In doing so, it marks a significant milestone for the mult-ihyphenate artist whose creative evolution continues to redefine expectations.
Set against the kinetic pulse of New York City, Get Lite tells the story of a talented yet sheltered dance student who discovers inspiration, love, and a sense of family in the most unexpected place—the city’s underground subway culture. The premise signals a grounded, human story driven by movement, identity, and connection, all themes that have long defined Taylor’s artistic voice.
Storm Reid Leads A Story Of Rhythm and Reinvention
Storm Reid (Euphoria, The Last of Us) is set to star in the film, while also producing through her A Seed & Wings Productions banner. Reid joins an accomplished production team that includes Kenya Barris and Anni Weisband under Khalabo Ink Society, Bill Karesh (Offbrnd), and Reid herself. Taylor will executive produce the project, maintaining a guiding creative presence throughout.
The film’s focus on dance as both expression and liberation feels particularly fitting for Taylor, whose career has consistently blurred the lines between music, film, choreography, and visual storytelling.
A Defining Moment In A Career-High Year
The announcement arrives during a career-defining season for Taylor. Her performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another has earned widespread critical acclaim, culminating in a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress, alongside nominations from SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA, and the Academy Awards. Adding to her momentum, Taylor also received her first Grammy nomination for her latest album, Escape Room.
With Get Lite, Taylor transitions from acclaimed performer to filmmaker. Bringing with her a deeply personal understanding of movement, culture, and emotional rhythm that could position the film as one of 2027’s most talked-about debuts.
Paramount’s Expanding 2026–2027 Slate
Alongside Get Lite, Paramount announced release dates for several other high-profile projects, signaling a strong and diverse upcoming slate.
Director Jonathan Levine is set to release an untitled sports drama on Christmas 2026, starring David Corenswet, fresh off the success of Superman. The film tells the inspiring true story of John Tuggle, the final pick—“Mr. Irrelevant”—of the 1983 NFL Draft, and his lasting impact on the New York Giants. Michael Shannon stars as legendary coach Bill Parcells, with Isabel May rounding out the cast.
Meanwhile, Potsy Ponciroli’s The Rescue, a modern Western starring Brandon Sklenar (1923) and Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone), is slated for January 29th, 2027. The film explores survival and resilience as a rodeo cowboy’s skills are tested beyond the arena.
With that being said, Paramount has also reserved July 16th, 2027, for an untitled event horror film, hinting at blockbuster ambitions in the genre space.
A New Voice Takes The Stage
With Get Lite, Teyana Taylor isn’t just making her directorial debut. In fact, she’s expanding the language of dance-driven storytelling in cinema. Rooted in authenticity and movement, the film promises a heartfelt exploration of identity, community, and the places where art is born.
As April 2027 approaches, Get Lite is shaping up to be more than a debut, but rather a statement. And for Taylor, it’s the next bold step in a career that shows no signs of slowing down.
