In Los Angeles, the word “marathon” has always meant more than distance. In fact, it represents vision, resilience, and community. This weekend, that meaning takes on a powerful new dimension as the Marathon Run Club honored the legacy of Nipsey Hussle by turning inspiration into action at the Los Angeles Marathon.
About 100 runners wearing Marathon Run Club shirts cross the finish line on Sunday, each stride serving as a tribute to the late rapper, entrepreneur, and community visionary whose influence continues to shape Crenshaw and beyond.
Turning Vision Into Movement… Literally
The Marathon Run Club was founded in 2024 by Nipsey’s longtime business associate George Panetta, fulfilling a promise that the two had discussed years earlier. For Nipsey, the concept of “The Marathon” was never just branding it was philosophy.
“Nipsey always told us… we got this thing called Marathon Brand. We run it figuratively. He’s the one that put the battery in our team’s back and said we’re going to do it” Panetta shared during an interview.
Now, that philosophy has become literal. What started as an idea has evolved into a growing community movement, blending fitness, purpose, and philanthropy.
Built On Unity
At the heart of the Marathon Run Club is a guiding principle rooted in an African proverb:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”.
That message has proven powerful. When the club hosted its first community run, between 400 and 500 people showed up. As a result, it represented a diverse mix of races, neighborhoods, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The turnout reaffirmed something Nipsey believed deeply: community empowerment begins when people move together with a shared purpose.
From Crenshaw To The Finish Line
Nipsey launched the Marathon brand in 2009 as a music label before expanding it into apparel and later food ventures, including the Marathon Burger chain after his passing in 2019.
Each business endeavor was tied to a bigger mission. In doing so, he invested back into the Crenshaw community that shaped him. Now, the Marathon Run Club is extending that mission even further.
Every participant in this year’s marathon is raising funds for the Neighborhood Foundation, which supports community-focused initiatives tied to the Marathon legacy.
The club’s primary fundraising goal is especially meaningful: transforming the historic Crenshaw Slauson Plaza, once home to the Marathon clothing store, into a community center dedicated to empowerment and opportunity.
“We’re chipping away $1 at a time! Just to make that happen” Panetta explained.
A Legacy That Keeps Moving
The Los Angeles Marathon will be broadcast live on NBC4 and Telemundo, allowing viewers to witness what is shaping up to be more than a race. They’ll be seeing a living tribute to Nipsey Hussle’s enduring impact.
Years after his passing, his message continues to resonate of ownership, unity, and long-term vision. For the runners of the Marathon Run Club, Sunday isn’t just about finishing 26.2 miles. It’s about proving that Nipsey’s blueprint for community empowerment is still in motion. Because as the world learned from Nipsey Hussle himself…The Marathon never stops.
