The O’Connells are officially back. Universal Pictures has set The Mummy 4 for release on May 19th, 2028, confirming that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return to their roles as Rick O’Connell and Evy Carnahan. More than 20 years after the original trilogy became a fan-favorite adventure saga, the franchise is returning to the big screen with its original stars.
After the 1999 film revitalized Universal’s Classic Monsters and became a summer box office hit, the series stalled following 2008’s The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. A 2017 reboot failed to launch a new era, prompting the studio to revisit what audiences loved most. The Fraser and Weisz’s chemistry-driven adventure.
This time, a new creative team is at the helm. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not) are directing, with a script by David Coggeshall. The May release date strategically places the film at the start of summer blockbuster season. The same window that helped make the original a success.
With over two years until release, Universal has ample time to craft a sequel worthy of its legacy. If executed well, The Mummy 4 could prove that some adventures are simply too iconic to stay buried.
