Nintendo fans know that in the Mario universe, surprises can appear in the most unexpected places — warp pipes, secret galaxies, and now… hidden corners of movie posters.
Ahead of the final trailer debut, Nintendo has unveiled a vibrant new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and eagle-eyed fans quickly spotted a nostalgic deep cut lurking near the bottom of the artwork. Just beside Mario’s massive boot sits a villain many longtime players haven’t seen in decades: Wart. For hardcore Nintendo enthusiasts, the cameo feels like a reward decades in the making.
A Deep-Cut Villain Returns
Wart — known in Japan as Mamu — first terrorized players as the main antagonist in Super Mario Bros. 2. The bubble-spitting amphibian ruled the dream world of Subcon and commanded the infamous 8-bits gang.
Despite serving as the final boss of that classic title, Wart largely disappeared from the franchise afterward. Aside from appearances in Super Mario Advance and a quirky cameo in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, the character remained one of Nintendo’s most obscure villains.
Now, decades later, he’s making an unexpected return. And this time, it’s on the big screen. Adding to the nostalgia factor, the poster also teases appearances from fellow Super Mario Bros. 2 character Mouser and the fan-favorite wildcard Birdo.
Mario Goes Galactic
The upcoming film takes the Mushroom Kingdom far beyond its usual landscapes, pushing the beloved franchise into full interstellar adventure. The story sees Mario and Luigi blasting into space to join forces with Princess Rosalina — ruler of the cosmos — to stop a new galactic threat.
Their enemy? None other than Bowser Jr., the ambitious and vengeful son of Bowser, whose plans could disrupt the balance of the universe. The movie boasts a stacked voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black returning to his fan-favorite role as Bowser. Joining them in the cosmic sequel is Brie Larson, voicing Princess Rosalina — a character whose celestial lore plays a central role in the Super Mario Galaxy games.
Nintendo’s Expanding Cinematic Universe
Following the massive success of animated video game adaptations in recent years, Nintendo appears committed to building a larger cinematic world around its iconic characters.
By introducing lesser-known villains like Wart and Mouser alongside core figures such as Bowser Jr., the franchise signals a deeper dive into Mario’s expansive gaming history. The kind that longtime fans appreciate and newcomers can discover. And with the final trailer set to drop on Monday, March 9th, the poster’s hidden characters may only be the beginning of the surprises awaiting audiences.
Launch Date Locked In
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters April 3th, 2026, promising colorful cosmic adventures, nostalgic callbacks, and plenty of Easter eggs for devoted gamers. If the poster is any indication, Nintendo isn’t just expanding the universe. In fact, they’re unlocking the secret levels.
