Mindy Kaling’s Scooby-Doo spinoff series Velma won’t be returning to Max for a third season, according to Davey Cummings, the show’s background painter. He revealed the unfortunate news in a since-deleted Instagram post. Max and Warner Bros. have yet to confirm the cancellation of the animated TV show. The end of Velma comes in the wake of its Halloween special called This Halloween Needs To Be More Special.
With the show being axed, the second season has many cliffhangers. Fans will never know where Velma’s love life lies or find out what happens to Fred in the Holloween special after he becomes possessed by a spellbook.
Velma stars Kaling as Velma, Constance Wu as Daphne, Sam Richardson as Shaggy, and Glenn Howerton as Fred. The season also had guest appearances from Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, Ken Leung, Cherry Jones, Frank Welker, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Fortune Feimster, Yvonne Orji, Sarayu Blue, Nicole Byer, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, Kulap Vilaysak, and more.
As stated in the synopsis, Velma is an adult animated comedy series that explores Velma Dinkley’s life. Velma is the brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang. The series is considered an “original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers.”
The first season of Velma premiered on Max in January 2023, and the second season premiered in April 2024.
