X-Men director Jake Schreier elaborated on how his Marvel Cinematic film will be different from 20th Century Fox’s.
While promoting the second season of Netflix’s Beef in a recent interview with ScreenRant, Schreier talked about working on the new movie and the pressure that comes with it. Although he didn’t share details about casting, he said the project means a lot to him. He added that he wants Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot to feel fresh and different from what fans have seen before.
“It’s a huge responsibility and an incredible opportunity,” Schreier explained.
The director said he and Marvel Studios are focused on taking the famous mutant team in new creative directions while still respecting the earlier X-Men films made by 20th Century Fox.
“Obviously, this series has done such incredible things and succeeded in so many ways,” he said. “Like, what are some places we can go, and some areas of the lore that we can explore where it feels like we’re taking people to a new place.”
Schreier began working on the film last August with writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo. Speaking to Empire Magazine, he described the experience as “very, very exciting.”
He also said that the skills he gained while directing Thunderbolts helped prepare him for the project, especially learning how to balance big action scenes with emotional character moments.
“The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes,” Schreier said. “By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’ These are very special experiences.”
Overall, Schreier hopes the new X-Men movie will stay true to its direction and storyline while giving audiences something completely new to look forward to.
