Amid trolling the cops and having a fan (almost) throw a note that said” DROP THE FUCKING ALBUM UZI” on his Bugatti Veyron, Lil Uzi Vert delivered “That Way” yesterday. The new single, in particular, takes inspiration from Backstreet Boys‘ 1999 hit, “I Want It That Way.”
Instead of using a slow, minimalistic beat like the boy pop band, producers Yung Lan, Felipe S, and Supah Mario made “That Way” more playful and up-beat by adding plenty of lush guitar progressions, knocking 808’s, and a sudden high-pitched outburst. Once the song starts, fans will hear Backstreet Boys’ member, Justin Timberlake singing ever so softly, “I want it that way,” repeatedly. Shortly after, “That Way” sees Vert using a melodic sing-song flow. Between lyrics, Vert speaks on his non-timid ways, money ventures, and bedroom acts with women.
So far, fans seem to be gravitating well to Uzi’s new release. On Twitter, user @bigracks penned “UZI RAPPING OVER A BACKSTREET BOYS ‘I WANT IT THAT WAY’ FLIP,” while user, @uzisgatti wrote “Ngl the original song by Backstreet Boys slaps, but when Uzi copied their style on his new song “That Way,” it made it 10x better.” One, however, seemed to have mixed feelings about the song and went on to say, “First listen: lmao wtf is this dumb Backstreet Boys sample. Second Listen: eh, it’s alright. Third Listen: IIIIII WANTTTTTTT IT THATTTTTTT WAYYYYYYY”
