At long last, the ultimate duo Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have unleashed the unbridled, dominant-hot-girl energy filled single, “WAP.” The new record, and visual arrived at the most fitting time (the weekend), and as promised, it’s a twerk-ready, searing bop!
In the music video, Cardi and Megan wander through a mansion, where lavish baroque inspired rooms are occupied by beautiful women, including some star studded cameos: Kylie Jenner, Normani and Rosalía, to name a few. In between, Cardi drops a verse in a leopard-printed room complete with a live leopard, as Megan takes the vocal lead in a marble lined bathroom that includes white tigers all while they both perform splits.
Prior to its release, Cardi took to social media to give is all a very important heads up in regards to the video. “I just want to let y’all know…the music video is going to be the censored version of the song, because the song is so nasty that YouTube was like, ‘Hold on, wait a minute, someone might be too Goddamn nasty,” she shared, therefore encouraging fans to listen to the full “nasty” version on streaming services. So, as you watch the visual keep this mind!
However, censored or uncensored Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are the perfect vessels for a record as raunchy as this one. We’ve experienced these hip hop queens before on records like “Trick” or “Bickenhead,” where Cardi paints elaborate stories surrounding her p–y. Or, “Big Ole Freak” and “Cash Shit,” where Megan drops gems on scamming guys out of money and nudes. “WAP” is no different, yet it feels like a pivotal single for both artists; as two of the biggest names in female hip-hop, this union is monumental, and will go on to make history as the day two icons assumed their rightful roles as rap-superheroes celebrating female sexuality.
The beat for “WAP,” by “Bickenhead” producers Ayo and Keyz, takes subtle cues from Megans previous “Cash Shit.” It’s a minimalist approach, with just a splash of sinister bass over spacious drum programming and the Frank Ski chop. And, all in good reason. The main focus here is the lyrics. There is so much top tier-filth going on in the lyrics, that an overwhelming beat would have simply thrown off this immaculate balance.
I have got to say that this track will really make you feel some type of way. Filled with horny one-liners, you may be compelled to listen to it on repeat. The chorus — “Yeah, you fucking with some wet-ass pussy” — might be the song’s tamest bar. Cardi is literally scorching: “My head game is fire, punani Dasani / It’s going in dry, and it’s coming out soggy,” and Thee Stallion didn’t come to play either: “Your Honor, I’m a freak bitch, handcuffs, leashes / Switch my wig, make him feel like he cheating.”
Overall, the video is a vibrant celebration of women of color (for the most part), purposely devoid of any men. I find it impossible to pick a favorite scene. From bootylicious choreographies, to Cardi and Megan serving face while lying in a pit full of snakes, to a wet exchange between the two divas in a pool, the video oozes with highly charged feminine energy, sexual liberty, and fashion-forward garments.
