To many, outer space is considered the final frontier; to Tom Cruise, it looks to just be the next chapter of his storied career. Per the Twitter account @ShuttleAlmanac, an account dedicated to discussing the American, Chinese and Russian space programs, a graphic they tweeted out yesterday illustrating upcoming plans for the International Space Station indicated that in October 2021, Cruise and Bourne Identity director Doug Liman are set to board a SpaceX flight to the space station to begin work on a new film. While rumors surrounding these potential plans hit news outlets earlier in the year, it seemed as though it would be nothing more than another Hollywood rumor; now, it would appear that the rumored collaboration between Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s space exploration company is coming to fruition, with Cruise set to make cinematic history.
Details about the film are still very limited as it is not expected to reach theaters for a few years, and the exact subject matter of the film is yet to be discussed publicly by Cruise, Doug Liman or anyone else involved. Some have pointed to a film titled Luna Park, a film originally discussed in 2015 written and directed by Liman and loosely connected to Cruise, focusing on renegade space workers as a potential direction for the film that would fit Cruise filming in space. Though this has been purely speculation thus far, it is difficult to say the least to imagine exactly where Cruise and Liman may take this endeavor; with that being said, if there is any duo to attempt something so daring, Cruise and Liman would be at the top of the list.
Cruise is no stranger to the daring nature of this feat. Having starred in one of the most action packed movie series to ever exist in the Mission: Impossible series, with the seventh film of the series currently in production, this should be nothing new for the legendary actor. Director Doug Liman has also seen his fair share of action, having directed and produced the 2002 film The Bourne Identity alongside Matthew Damon, another movie series revered for the action it employed much like the Mission: Impossible series. Tom Cruise has had nothing short of a remarkable career, and this would appear to be a furtherance of that as he and Doug Liman go to lengths that no director or actor have managed to reach before them.
