Pop Smoke is still making waves in music and entertainment. A new track from the late Brooklyn rapper, “AP,” just dropped ahead of his posthumous film debut in Eddie Huang’s Boogie. In the signature BK drill style Pop Smoke is known for, “AP” is a fitting anthem for Pop’s character, Monk, the basketball rival of protagonist Alfred “Boogie” Chin (Taylor Takahashi).
We get a glimpse of Pop Smoke as well as co-star Taylour Paige in the film’s first trailer. Boogie is director/writer Huang’s first feature-length project, following up his ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, based on his memoir. Boogie was shot prior to Pop Smoke’s untimely passing in February 2020.
“AP,” is truly electrifying! Charged with synths, and Smoke’s hyped ad-libs the record simply makes you want to hit the Woo! He spits, “Talk to me nice (Talk to me nice), or don’t talk at all, ah (Or don’t talk at all) / I make a call and it’s war (I make a call).” Smokes energy is tangible as he spews out each and every bar.
The rappers posthumous album Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon came out last summer, followed by a deluxe edition featuring Young Thug, Gunna, Burna Boy, Jamie Foxx, and more. I find it safe to say that this album single handedly took over all of our playlists. Now, nearly a year later, we have another banger to fill our speakers with.
