Stephen King is one of few men on this planet whose name is as revered in film as it is in literature. The king of horror has spent the past few decades cementing his position through the adaptation of several works into films that would turn heads of moviegoers around the globe. Among those include the killer clown thriller It and high-school horrorshow Carrie, both classic films that have even been remade in recent years as demand for King’s work surges once again. Another project that has seen a remake in recent years is the 1989 film Pet Sematary, being reimagined in 2019 for a new generation of fans and met with generally positive reviews. Now this universe is set to be revisited once again in a new prequel film, and they have added some impressive names to round out the project’s cast.
For those who are unfamiliar, Pet Sematary is a film about a family who moves next door to a pet cemetery in the middle of the woods. The problem with this cemetery is the supernatural secret it possesses, bringing life back to those many considered long gone and tormenting the new family almost immediately. The 2019 remake starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow was met with positive reviews, highlighting demand for Stephen King is stronger than ever before, and now a follow-up to that project is in the works. The upcoming Pet Sematary film is set to be a prequel film, though little is known about the project’s plot, and has cast Jack Mulhern, of Mare of Easttown fame, along with Natalie Alyn Lind and Isabella Star LeBlanc to join its cast.
The upcoming prequel will debut on Paramount+, with Lindsay Beer penning the screenplay and making her directorial debut on the project after working on the project Sierra Burgess is a Loser. The 2018 project was met with good reviews, however this will mark Beer’s first venture into horror. The script will also be based upon a draft by Jeff Buhler who wrote the screenplay of the 2019 film, giving the budding filmmaker a jumping off point for the upcoming project. Stephen King fans and other moviegoers can remain on the lookout for further updates about the upcoming Pet Sematary prequel in the near future.
