In recent years, the opioid epidemic has taken a foothold in American society as everyday citizens battle with the gripes of addiction like never before. From oxycodone to fentanyl, opioids are being abused at a rate unlike ever before that has completely reshaped how we perceive them on a large scale. Some point fingers at the pharmaceutical companies who produce these drugs, while others point towards the doctors who are so willing to prescribe them to virtually any patient they see. While it is certainly a touchy topic, Hulu has unveiled the trailer for a new series that explores every angle of the opioid epidemic in depth aptly titled Dopesick.
Based upon the book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America written by Beth Marcy, Dopesick takes place in a small Virginia town where the opioid epidemic first took off. Oscillating from the perspective of pharmaceutical executives to government officials and regular citizens, the new series dives deep into one of the biggest problems currently facing the United States and seemingly doesn’t even attempt to hold back. As made evident by the new trailer seen above, all of these perspectives and even more were taken into consideration while producing this project to aptly tell the story that is the opioid crisis. The trailer additionally highlights the cast of the series which includes Michael Stuhlbarg as Purdue Pharma executive Richard Sackler, Michael Keaton, and Rosario Dawson along with several other notable names. Subscribers can catch Dopesick when it premieres on Hulu in a few short weeks on October 13th.
While it is no secret that drugs have had a substantial impact upon America over the past few decades, this is a whole different beast. With the newfound prevalence of incredibly powerful and addictive synthetic opioids that have emerged in recent years, more Americans than ever are getting hooked than ever before. Thus it is no surprise that Hulu is venturing to do such a gritty project, and based upon the trailer it certainly should pique viewers interest. Hulu subscribers will just have to wait until October 13th when Dopesick hits the streaming service.
