With the way Netflix and Hulu essentially dominate the on-demand video streaming market, more and more players are emerging from the woodwork as time passes. Virtually every major television network is on pace to have their own streaming service by the end of the decade, and now even retailers have been venturing into the space. That retailer in question is Amazon, the behemoth of a company that manages to sink their teeth into virtually any sector imaginable. In that context, streaming was just another casualty for them with Amazon Prime quickly becoming, arguably, the third biggest on-demand video streaming service on the planet. Among the projects that helped them achieve this status is the satirical superhero series The Boys that has caught the eye of critics since it premiered in 2019, and now Amazon has confirmed that a spin-off to the fan favorite project is on the way.
In an era of superhero renaissance, The Boys definitely didn’t fit the mold of your stereotypical superhero project when it debuted a few short years ago. The series focuses on a group of men who are rather immature given their supernatural abilities, likely shedding light on how The Boys earned its name in the first place. This theoretical dissonance is likely the reason the series has been such a success thus far however, highlighting that, beneath the tights, superheroes are people too. Amazon will seemingly be doubling down on that discord in their new project which is set to be a spin-off of The Boys, which will take place in a college setting as the stories of students of America’s only school for superheroes are explored. The project is currently in production under the working title Untitled The Boys Spinoff and is likely to hit Amazon Prime sometime next year.
While most people probably didn’t expect Amazon to amass such a substantial share of the on-demand video streaming market, admittedly Jeff Bezos had started the company simply to sell books. Amazon has grown well beyond even Bezos’ wildest expectations, reshaping the everyday lives of humans unlike virtually any company prior had ever been capable of in the process. Amazon is simply concerned with fulfilling consumers’ demands, whether they are consuming books, food or even television. Fans of The Boys have already been eagerly anticipating season three of the refreshing new series, and now they have another project to look forward to in the presently untitled The Boys spin-off series that is in production.
