Even when it seems Marvel has reached the bottom of the barrel, they almost always have something in the works to keep their fervent fanbase at ease. After Avengers: Endgame seemingly signalled an end to an era packed with superhero films, they extended upon one of their most lucrative franchises and released Spider-Man: Far From Home. Throughout the pandemic, they released multiple new series via the Disney+ platform such as Wandavision and Loki which were lauded by both critics and fans alike and gave Disney+ subscribers some much needed entertainment during quarantine. No matter the hurdle in their way, Marvel is virtually always ready to go with a new project to ensure their dedicated fanbase is happy. With all of that being said, a new Marvel project is currently on the way starring Marvel veteran Samuel L. Jackson in the series Secret Invasion.
While Jackson may not be the first face you think of when you think about Marvel, he has been at the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception. Beginning in 2008, the year the first Iron Man film was released, he was cast to play the fictional character Nick Fury, a former Army colonel who helps unite the Avengers in the face of evil and serves as a de-facto leader. The new series Secret Invasion will be a little different however: in it, shape-shifting creatures better known as Skrulls have infiltrated the earth and are taking the form of virtually anybody from trashmen to superheroes and Fury, alongside his team, are forced to put a stop to them. That team will include the likes of Ben Mendelsohn, Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, amongst others, and is set to be produced by Jonathan Schwartz who also produced the Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which released earlier this year. No exact release date has been announced yet, however the series is expected to debut some time next year.
While his role didn’t warrant the most camera time, Jackson’s role as Nick Fury was more integral to the series than most might realize. In the aforementioned position of de-facto leader, Fury oversaw the events of virtually every Marvel film and was just as much of a force behind-the-scenes as Tony Stark was on the screen. Now he will be getting the screen time he deserves as Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, set to debut on Disney+ next year.
