Over the past few years, we have been witness to a seismic shift in television programming that has emphasized edgy new content that pushes the envelope. A byproduct of the inception of streaming, television has come to look very different than it did twenty years ago. Crime dramas such as Breaking Bad and Power have taken selling drugs to a whole new level while shows like The Walking Dead have helped revitalize the horror genre, and these are just a few examples amongst very many. Another great example of this new wave of content is the FX comedy series Atlanta which debuted a few years ago to significant fanfare, and fans of the series will be excited to hear that the eagerly anticipated third season now has an official release date.
Originally hitting the airwaves in 2016, Atlanta is helmed by and stars the incredibly talented Donald Glover as a young man living in the city from which the series gets its title as he struggles to find his way. He does seemingly get some sort of direction by the end of the series’ first season however, finding work as the manager of an up-and-coming rapper who is also his cousin. He quickly realizes the music industry isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be though, being confronted with a diverse array of challenges that make you laugh as much as they make you think. Atlanta has been on a hiatus since 2018, with production being significantly hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, that has left fans frothing at the mouth for more, however it looks like they wait is about to be over as FX has finally announced the official release date of season three. Even if you haven’t tuned in yet, you still have plenty of time to catch up before season three of Atlanta premieres on FX on March 24th, 2022
Atlanta is a fantastic representation of the seismic shift we have seen in television programming over the past decade, highlighting a proportion of the country that has been underrepresented in popular media. African-American culture is as much a part of this country’s history as any other, and Donald Glover has done a fantastic job of highlighting a part of the culture that has been widely ignored by the likes of Hollywood. It also does an amazing job of being both funny and thought provoking in doing so, making it obvious why Atlanta has become such a hit amongst fans. Now those fans and anybody else who may be interested have something to look forward to, with season three of Atlanta set to hit televisions in a few short months
