Rubert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011 marked 20th Century Fox’s official reboot of the original sci-fi franchise. And now, Disney and 20th Century have announced the fourth installment of this series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, sharing an early first look.
The three Planet of the Apes films were all directed by Matt Reeves and starred Andy Serkis as Caesar. They became very successful, with Serkis’ performance–including his motion capture work–earning high praise. The success of the franchise led Disney to decide to start working on another installment after it acquired 20th Century Studios.
Wes Ball, director of The Maze Runner trilogy, has been busy developing Planet of the Apes 4 for Disney and 20th Century Fox for the last few years. Not much is known about the plot other than it picks up after War for the Planet of the Apes’ ending and Caesar’s death. Owen Teague has been cast as the new lead ape.
20th Century Fox has announced the title of their new Planet of the Apes movie- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. They have also released some concept art for the film, which is set many years after War for the Planet of The Apes in the franchise timeline. Additionally, they have announced that Freya Allen (The Witcher) and Peter Macon (The Orville) will be joining the cast. No official release date has been given yet although production is set to begin next month so it’s possible we’ll see it sometime in 2024.
