Over the decades, countless highly regarded filmmakers have made a name for themselves working at the highest level of entertainment: film. From the early days of Alfred Hitchcock to later efforts by individuals like Stanley Kubrick and Quentin Tarantino, Hollywood history is peppered with the works of highly regarded men and women who have managed to create films that resonate with with audiences across the globe and, subsequently, live on in history. Another name who belongs at the top of that list of filmmakers is Martin Scorsese, who has been making films since the 1960’s and has a résumé littered with irrefutable classics that span decades. Now the beloved filmmaker is back for his latest project Killers of the Flower Moon, and we have the details hot off the press for you.
Scorsese began his filmmaking career when he made his directorial debut with the release of the 1967 indie drama Who’s That Knocking at My Door, a project that grossed only about $15,000. His big break though came when Columbia Pictures hired Scorsese to direct the 1976 classic Taxi Driver starring Robert De Niro, grossing nearly $30 million in box offices on a budget of under $2 million, and Scorsese never looked back. He’d go on to direct 1980’s Raging Bull, 1990’s Goodfellas, 2006’s The Departed, and, most recently, in 2019 when he worked alongside Netflix to create the mafia drama The Irishman, with 72 directing credits to his name to date. Now he is back with his latest project Killers of the Flower Moon, a western set to adapt David Grann’s 2017 book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and The Birth of the FBI. Grann’s book detailed the murder of 20 members of the native Osage tribe in Oklahoma in the 1920’s and subsequent events, and has been an item of interest to everybody in filmmaking since the rights to the story were originally sold in 2016 before the book could even hit shelves. The trailer for the project can be seen below with longtime Scorsese collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and the aforementioned Robert De Niro both featured, with DiCaprio providing a suspenseful narration that combines with the rather docile imagery and sounds to create an eerie feeling of dread that only a director like Scorsese can create. Killers of the Flower Moon is set to make its world premiere this week at the Cannes Film Festival, and will see its official theatrical release on October 6th later this year before eventually being made available on Apple TV+ following its theatrical run.
Not many directors could handle this topic as well as a director like Scorsese seemingly has here, and he’s enlisted some of his closest and most talented collaborators to assist him in telling a story that certainly seems worth telling. If the film is even half as suspenseful as the trailer was then it looks like this project is going to be money well spent by Columbia Pictures and Apple. Scorsese fans and other film fanatics can look forward to seeing Killers or the Flower Moon this fall when it debuts in theaters October 6th.
