Over the past fifteen years, we have seen the genre of superhero films evolve tremendously. What began with Marvel rebooting the Iron Man franchise in 2008 has become something that nobody could’ve ever seen coming, with countless superhero films from both Marvel and other production companies having been released since then. There is no end in sight either as more superhero films than ever before are being produced every year, providing viewers with dozens of new films and series that have certainly left them very pleased. To back that point up, it was announced earlier today that Sony has announced release dates for two more impending superhero films and one of them is seemingly poised to be a blockbuster project.
While Marvel has dominated the superhero film space since the aforementioned release of the Iron Man reboot, Sony actually owns the rights to one of their most iconic superheroes in Spider-Man. Fans will likely remember the fantastic job Tobey Maguire did when he donned the notorious red and blue jumpsuit in the early 2000’s, and for obvious reasons Sony has maintained their ownership of the rights to the Spider-Man franchise as the superhero genre has grown tremendously in recent years. As a result, fans have spent the bulk of their time theorizing what the two new untitled Sony/Marvel projects could possibly be. Those release dates are November 8th, 2024 and June 27th, 2025, with the latter being a prime date for a potential summer blockbuster. Some fans are speculating that the first release date could be for Venom 3 as that film is currently in pre-production, and the past two Venom films have also seen released around Halloween. However something much bigger is expected for the 2025 release date, with many speculating that it will likely be the return of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man as Sony has remained insistent about continuing on with live-action Spider-Man films, however producer Amy Pascal has pushed back on that and noted that writing is suspended amidst the current writer’s strike that is taking place in Hollywood. Regardless though, Sony wouldn’t announce these release dates if they didn’t have something up their sleeves and eager fans will likely be rewarded for their patience as either date creeps closer.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has virtually become its own genre at this point, and Sony is likely very happy they can be apart of it. Spider-Man is amongst the most iconic superheroes to ever exist, and both the live-action and animated reboots have helped breathe new life into the timeless franchise. Another animated film is already slated to be released sometime next year, and depending on what Sony decides to do there could be even more in store for fans.
