Free Guy 2 has been on the back burner for quite some time. But now that’s all about to change. During a sit-down with The Direct, screenwriter Zak Penn shared an update about the upcoming movie and explained why it’s been delayed. He said the team wanted to make this film extra special after the first one was such a big success.
Although he was hush-hush about any new progress, he said that they wanted to take their time to ensure that it matched everyone’s vision.
“I think Shawn and Ryan Reynolds felt really good about the movie and felt like they didn’t want to rush into a sequel because they thought it worked for what it is… I wish I could give you an update, but I’m not sure,” Penn said.
Back in 2023, Shawn Levy shared a similar creative twist toward the second Free Guy movie.
He said, “We are developing a sequel, but the truth is that you now have Barbie that has obviously left a mark about a character in a fictional world who comes to self-awareness. So, we’re only gonna make Free Guy 2 if it’s different than the first movie and if it’s different from other movies.”
The first Free Guy was released in 2021 and became a big hit at the worldwide box office, earning $121,626,598.
