Sony’s new Resident Evil movie is already taking the box office by storm.
Directed by Zach Cregger, who also made Weapons, the reboot gives fans a fresh twist on the popular horror video game series. The movie earned $8.8 million during Thursday previews and is expected to make between $40 million and $50 million in the United States this weekend. However, positive reviews could push it to $60 million.
The film cost $75 million to make, and it could become another box-office hit for Cregger. His previous horror movie, Weapons, made $270 million worldwide after opening with $43 million. It also earned $5.7 million during previews, which is way less than Resident Evil.
Resident Evil began as a horror video game in 1996 and has since spawned sequels, spinoffs, remakes, movies, and TV shows. Milla Jovovich starred in eight films directed by Paul W.S. Anderson throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
The franchise’s biggest movie so far is 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife. It opened with $26 million in the United States and went on to earn $300 million worldwide.
