Throughout the year of 2019 there have been several classics revivals, reboots, and long awaited sequels, and even some that were rejected and agreed not to be touched. One reboot that not many saw coming was this years’ Charlie’s Angels; directed, written, and produced by Elizabeth Banks, who also plays a supporting role as Bosley. As it turns out not many people were too thrilled about a reboot, but Banks has something to say about that:
You’ve had 37 Spider-Man movies and you’re not complaining! I think women are allowed to have one or two action franchises every 17 years —I feel totally fine with that.
Charlie’s Angels has been entertaining audiences for many years, across different mediums. The 1978 show ran for years, followed by the successful set of movies in the early 2000’s and a TV reboot in 2011. There have been plenty of different Spider-Man movies as well as different actors, without much complaint from the public so with that being said, Banks believed Charlie’s Angels could return to theaters for the first time since 2003.
This new version of Charlie’s Angels brought the Townsend Agency to the modern world, and provided an origin story for a new trio of Angels. But while the blockbuster had a strong cast and its own killer soundtrack, it failed to perform during its first weekend at the box office. The movie received good reviews both critically and on audience aggregators, but not many moviegoers ran out to theaters to watch Banks’ latest project.
The Spider-Man movies have made a great deal of money at the box office over the years, so it doesn’t seem that “too many reboots” is really an issue among moviegoers. The reasons behind this poor performance will hopefully become clear in the upcoming days, and it’ll be interesting to see if Charlie’s Angels ends up being able to turn a profit at the box office.
