So we finally get confirmation that the Emmy winning, critically acclaimed Atlanta is coming back for a season four. Ironically, this is before production has begun for the previously announced season three. FX made the announcement Tuesday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. Production on Seasons 3 and 4 is slated to begin in the spring. Both seasons will consist of eight episodes.
The multi-faceted Donald Glover created the series and stars along with Brian Tyree Henry, Zazie Beetz, and Lakeith Stanfield. The series is executive produced by Glover and his brother, Stephen, along with Paul Simms, Dianne McGunigle, and Hiro Murai. FX Productions produces.
“What more can be said about ‘Atlanta’ than the critical acclaim and accolades that Donald, Paul, Dianne, Stephen, and Hiro have earned for two exceptional seasons of what is clearly one of the best shows on television,” said Eric Schrier, president of FX Entertainment. “This group of collaborators and cast have created one of the most original, innovative stories of this generation and we are proud to be their partners.”
The series has done well for itself, winning five Emmys out of 22 nominations over two seasons thus far. Season 1 had the show nominated six times and winning twice, with both awards going to Glover for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series and outstanding directing for a comedy series.
Since production is set to begin next spring, you can look to season three possibly premiering late 2020. With FX saying that Atlanta Season 3 and Atlanta Season 4 will both begin production in Spring 2020, meaning Donald Glover and crew will be making two seasons of Atlanta at once. Either that or they’ll be shooting them back-to-back with a break in between. Each season will consist of eight episodes.
Whether we get new episodes next year or the next, I am looking forward and anxiously anticipating new episodes of the impressive show.
