One of the hottest, or should I say coldest, new releases this week is the long anticipated new collab between Blackpink and Selena Gomez, “Ice Cream”. The bold, pink haired, edgy all female K-Pop group recently made a rapid breakthrough into the American and international music scene by releasing multiple bilingual and English hits, especially the more recent catchy bilingual song “How You Like That”. Now, they have expanded their reach as they caught the attention of more popular American artists and therefore took this opportunity to collaborate with them as they happily did with Selena Gomez. This fully in English hit has exciting and fun vibe that draws beyond international borders and differences to make music, as K-Pop and American artists connect and their respective music scenes are increasingly intertwined.
“Ice Cream” does in fact scream those sweet, tasty, chill end of summer vibes. The song is performed by all females, and the music video is surrounded by ice cream and candy amidst a background filled with pastel colors, mainly bubblegum pink that matches perfectly with the K-Pop girls’ pink highlights in their hair. All of the women are decked in sunglasses and beautiful summer outfits as they strut in style, ride bikes, sing, and dance. The opening scene features one of the Blackpink women happily juggle a tennis/ ping pong ball on a bright pink paddle and another slide down a candy yellow colored slide like on a playground, emphasizing the laid back nature of the video as the women all hang out and enjoy summer. It feels natural. In addition, one of the really nice scenes is seeing Selena Gomez take her ice cream from the truck and giving the camera a knowing and daring look as she confidently strides forward with her treat that definitely “looks good enough to eat”. The lyrics are also flirty in a girly way yet casual and chill at the same time, complementing the colorful atmosphere and food filled dances.
